To understand his breakthrough, one must look at the mechanics of steam power. Earlier designs, such as the impulse turbine invented by Gustaf de Laval, faced a major problem. These machines subjected the mechanism to massive centrifugal forces. Because the materials available at the time were relatively weak, the output was limited. Parsons realized that high-velocity steam could actually cut into the metal parts of the engine. To solve this, he developed the compound steam turbine. He decided to split the fall in steam pressure into small, fractional expansions. This process happened across a large number of turbines arranged in series. By doing this, the velocity of the steam remained at a moderate level throughout the system. This approach prevented damage to the metal and allowed for much higher power outputs.

Parsons's career was marked by rapid technological growth and commercial success. He founded C. A. Parsons and Company in Newcastle in 1889 to produce his turbo generators. In 1890, his Newcastle and District Electric Lighting Company opened the Forth Banks Power Station. This was the first power station in the world to use turbo generators for electricity.

While his first turbine was only 1.6% efficient and produced just 7.5 kilowatts, he made fast improvements. By 1899, he had built his first megawatt turbine for a plant in Elberfeld, Germany. This machine produced single-phase electricity at 4 kV. These incremental steps transformed the turbine from a small experimental tool into a massive industrial engine.

Marine applications provided another major stage for his inventions. Parsons founded the Parsons Marine Steam Turbine Company to apply his technology to ships. In June 1897, he famously demonstrated this at the Navy Review for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. He used his turbine-powered yacht, the Turbinia, to show the potential of his design.

Within two years, destroyers like HMS Viper and HMS Cobra were launched using his turbines. By 1901, the first turbine-powered passenger ship, the TS King Edward, was in service. The technology even reached transatlantic liners like the RMS Victorian and RMS Virginian by 1905. In 1906, the HMS Dreadnought became the first turbine-powered battleship, which was considered the first modern battleship.
