Channel One is a major federal television channel in Russia. It serves as a primary source of news and entertainment for millions of viewers. The station is headquartered at the Ostankino Technical Center in Moscow. This center is located near the famous Ostankino Tower. Most of the channel's shares are owned or indirectly controlled by the Russian state. This ownership structure means the government maintains significant influence over the station.

The history of the channel is tied to the collapse of the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union was abolished, the Russian Federation took over its many institutions. On December 27, 1991, President Boris Yeltsin signed a decree regarding the central television system. This decree transformed the All-Union State Television and Radio Company into the Russian State Television and Radio Company Ostankino. In 1994, a new decree transformed Ostankino into a closed joint-stock company called Russian Public Television, or ORT. This change happened because the station faced a difficult financial situation. It had very high transmission costs and a massive staff of about 10,000 people in early 1995.

The management of ORT was often marked by intense struggle. Boris Berezovsky, a Russian oligarch, gained control over the station to replace the failing Programme One. He appointed Vladislav Listyev as the CEO. However, Listyev was assassinated three months later during a struggle for control over advertising sales. Following his death, Alexander Yakovlev resigned as chairman. The channel's ownership was split between state agencies with 51% and private shareholders with 49%. In 1998, a financial collapse nearly made the channel insolvent. To prevent this, the government provided a $100 million loan through Vnesheconombank.

Technological upgrades have defined how Channel One broadcasts its content. In September 2008, the station installed new digital audio mixing systems. These were placed in a state-of-the-art complex at the Ostankino Technical Centre. The news facility opened in March 2008 using advanced server technology from manufacturers like Evertz. On December 24, 2012, the channel began broadcasting a 1080i high-definition signal. To manage Russia's vast geography, the channel changed its feed system in 2018. Previously, it used only five feeds for the entire country. Now, it uses eleven separate feeds for each of Russia's eleven time zones. This ensures that programs air at the correct local time for every viewer.

The channel produces a wide variety of original content. It is known for producing highly successful films. For example, Night Watch (2004) and Day Watch (2006) were among the highest-grossing movies after the Soviet era. The station also broadcasts many popular international formats. These include adaptations of shows like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and Survivor. For children, it offers programming such as Sesame Street and various animated series. The news programs are a central part of the schedule. The program Vremya has been on the air since 1968.

Channel One competes with several other major Russian networks. Its main competitors include Russia-1, NTV, 5TV, and TV Centre. As of 2019, the organization employed 2,443 people. Viewers can access the channel through the internet. There are different websites for different audiences. The site 1tv.ru is for viewers in Russia. The site 1tv.com is intended for international viewers. This digital presence allows the channel to reach a global audience beyond the borders of the Russian Federation.

In recent years, the channel has faced international scrutiny. On May 8, 2022, the United States Department of the Treasury placed sanctions on Channel One Russia. The Office of Foreign Assets Control issued these sanctions because the channel is owned or controlled by the Government of Russia. This highlights the channel's connection to the state and its role in the international political landscape. Despite these complexities, the station remains a massive part of the Russian media system. It continues to shape how information is shared across the country.
