India built this city after it became independent. Before this, the capital of Punjab was Lahore. But Lahore became part of Pakistan during the Partition. India needed a new place for its government to work.
Many famous people helped plan the city. An American named Albert Mayer made the first plan. Later, a Swiss-French architect named Le Corbusier took over. He designed the city using a grid of many sectors. These sectors are large blocks for living and working. His work is very famous. The Capitol Complex is now a World Heritage Site.

Building this city was a very big job. In 1947, India became independent, but the country was divided during the Partition. The old capital of Punjab, Lahore, became part of Pakistan. This left the Indian state of Punjab without a place for its government. Leaders needed a new center that could hold many offices and help people move there.
Many smart planners worked to design the city. First, an American planner named Albert Mayer created a fan-shaped plan. He wanted to use ideas from the "Garden City" movement to make it beautiful.

People often call Chandigarh "The City of Beauty." This name comes from a famous way of planning cities to be lovely and organized. It is known for being a very modern and happy place to live. In 2015, a survey even ranked it as the happiest city in India. The city connects well to other places by road, rail, and air.
Chandigarh is a major city and union territory in northwestern India.
The creation of Chandigarh was a direct response to the Partition of India in 1947. During this time, the province of Punjab was divided into two parts. The western part became Pakistan, while the eastern part remained in India. The former capital, Lahore, fell into Pakistan. This left the Indian state of East Punjab without an administrative center. Government offices were scattered across various locations, which was inefficient and costly. Leaders decided to build a completely new capital to provide stability and unity.
The planning process involved several different experts and evolving ideas. Initially, the American planner Albert Mayer was selected in 1949. He created a fan-shaped masterplan based on the Garden City movement. This plan used neighborhood units called superblocks arranged in a curvilinear street layout. Mayer worked with the Polish architect Maciej Nowicki to develop these designs. However, Nowicki died in a plane crash in 1950. Due to various challenges, Mayer was eventually replaced by a new team of architects.
A team led by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier took over the project.
One of the most important areas is the Capitol Complex.

Chandigarh has experienced significant growth since its construction began. The tri-city metropolitan area now has a combined population exceeding 1,611,770 people.

The name "Chandigarh" has deep historical and cultural roots. It means "fort of Chandi," combining the name of the Hindu goddess Chandi with the word "Garh," meaning stronghold. The name comes from a village where a temple for the goddess once stood. This temple still exists today at Chandi Mandir in the nearby district of Panchkula. The city is also nicknamed "The City of Beauty." This title comes from the City Beautiful movement of the late 1800s. This philosophy emphasizes creating organized and aesthetically pleasing urban environments.
