Some evidence suggests that lead might have been the first metal humans smelted. Lead is easy to obtain by heating galena. Archaeologists found lead beads at Chatal Hüyük in central Anatolia. They also found a lead bracelet at Yarim Tepe I dating to the 6th millennium BC. Copper smelting also appeared in this region shortly after 6000 BC. 
The introduction of copper changed how people made stone tools. In the Tehran Plain of Iran, researchers noticed a decline in stone tool quality. As copper tools became available, the specialized craft of making high-quality stone tools changed. The complex networks used to trade fine stone materials seemed to collapse. Instead, people began using local materials for household-based stone production. This shows how new technology can reshape entire economic systems. In eastern Turkey, sites like Norşuntepe show that people were even making arsenical copper around 4200 BC. They added arsenic to the copper to change its properties.
Europe shows many different patterns of copper use. In Britain, the Chalcolithic was a short period between 2,500 and 2,200 BC. This time saw the arrival of the Bell Beaker culture and new gold objects. In northern Germany and Denmark, copper artifacts date from 4000 to 3300 BC. These belonged to the Funnel Beaker group. Interestingly, some European cultures made stone axes that looked exactly like copper axes. They even carved the shapes of metal molds into the stone. A famous find from 3300 BC is Ötzi the Iceman, who carried a Mondsee copper axe. 
South Asia also had active Chalcolithic cultures. In the Indus Valley, ceramic similarities suggest people were trading and moving often. In present-day Pakistan, the people of Mehrgarh made tools from local copper ore. In India, several farming communities flourished, such as the Ahar and Jorwe cultures. Each community had its own style of painted pottery. For instance, the Banas culture used red, white, and black designs. In the village of Sanauli, archaeologists found copper weapons and carts from 1800 BC. These artifacts belong to the Ochre Coloured Pottery culture.
