As a co-founder, he served as the Chief Executive Officer, or CEO, of YouTube. The CEO is the highest-ranking person in a company. Hurley held this leadership position from the start until October 2010. After he resigned as CEO, he continued to help the company as an advisor. His work helped change how people share and watch videos on the internet.

Before his success with YouTube, Hurley worked in the PayPal division of eBay. During his time there, he performed several important tasks. One specific job involved designing the original logo for PayPal. He later teamed up with two other former PayPal employees. These men were Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. Together, they founded YouTube to create a new way to manage digital media. Hurley focused on specific technical aspects of the site. He was primarily responsible for video-sharing and the tagging system. Tagging allows users to label videos so they can be organized and found easily.
