Cervical collar

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A cervical collar is a medical tool used to support the neck. It is also called a neck brace. These devices help to immobilize a person's neck. Immobilization means keeping the neck from moving too much. This is very important if someone has a neck injury. A person might have a fracture in their cervical spine. This is a break in the bones of the neck. Moving a person with this injury could cause serious harm. It could even lead to paralysis or death.

There are several ways these collars work to help patients. Some are soft collars made of felt. These are flexible and are used for minor injuries. They are less limiting but can be risky for people with weak bones. Other types are rigid collars. These are made of firm plastic or plexiglass. They use straps and padded liners to stay in place. These collars have many parts like a chin pad and a back pad. They even have air holes for ventilation.

People have been using these tools for a long time. George Cottrell invented the cervical collar in 1966. He created it during the Vietnam War. He wanted to help American soldiers with neck injuries. Later, an orthopedic surgeon named Dr. JD Farrington made them more popular. He wrote a paper called "Death in a Ditch." He saw people being moved from cars in a way that was not safe. He believed using collars could help prevent more injuries during rescues.

Medical workers must follow specific steps to use a collar correctly. First, they must remove any jewelry or clothing from the neck. Then, they measure the length of the patient's neck. One person holds the neck still while another person fits the collar. The collar must be tight enough to stop movement. However, it must not be so tight that it presses on blood vessels. If it is too tight, it can cause skin sores called pressure ulcers.

Cervical collars are used in many different parts of life. Some people wear them to help with pain from whiplash. Others might need them after a surgery like a spinal fusion. Even athletes in sports like motocross wear protective collars. These racers use them to avoid neck injuries during high-speed races. In some cases, doctors use them to help people with sleep apnea. This helps keep the airway clear while the person sleeps.
