This galaxy looks strange. It has a dark band of dust across its middle. Scientists think this happened because of a merger. A merger is when two galaxies crash into each other. A large elliptical galaxy likely hit a smaller spiral galaxy. This crash caused a burst of new stars to form.

Centaurus A helps us understand how galaxies change. It is part of the Centaurus A/M83 Group. This group is located in the Virgo Supercluster. The galaxy is a starburst galaxy. This means it has a huge burst of new star formation. This burst likely happened because of the old galactic collision. 
Centaurus A is a unique and highly active galaxy located in the constellation of Centaurus. It is known by several names, including NGC 5128 and Caldwell 77. This galaxy is significant because it is the closest radio galaxy to Earth. It is also the closest BL Lac object, which is a type of active galaxy. The black hole produces a relativistic jet, which is a stream of matter ejected at extreme speeds. The inner parts of this jet move at about half the speed of light. 
Astronomers believe Centaurus A is a starburst galaxy. A starburst galaxy is a place where stars are forming at a very high rate. This intense burst of star formation is likely caused by a galactic collision. Models suggest that a large elliptical galaxy collided with a smaller spiral galaxy. This collision likely triggered the creation of many new stars. Over 100 star formation regions have been identified within the dusty disk. The bulge of the galaxy is mostly made of older, red stars. 
The history of observing Centaurus A is quite long. The Scottish astronomer James Dunlop discovered the galaxy in 1826. He made this discovery while working at the Parramatta Observatory in Australia. In 1949, researchers John Gatenby Bolton, Bruce Slee, and Gordon Stanley identified it as an extragalactic radio source. In 1954, Walter Baade and Rudolph Minkowski suggested the merger theory. This theory explained why the galaxy looked so disturbed. Later, the Hubble Space Telescope discovered young blue stars along the central dust band in 1990.
Many different telescopes have provided new details about this galaxy. In 1979, the Einstein Observatory detected an X-ray jet coming from the nucleus. The Chandra X-ray Observatory identified over 200 new point sources in 1999. In 2006, the Spitzer Space Telescope found a parallelogram-shaped structure made of dust. The H.E.S.S. Observatory in Namibia detected high-energy gamma emissions in 2009. We have even observed individual stars exploding within the galaxy. For example, Robert Evans discovered a Type Ia supernova named SN 1986G in 1986. 
Centaurus A is a vital part of a larger cosmic structure. It sits at the center of one of two subgroups in the Centaurus A/M83 Group. This group is located within the much larger Virgo Supercluster. The other subgroup in this group is centered around the Messier 83 galaxy. Studying Centaurus A helps scientists understand how different types of galaxies interact. While collisions between spiral galaxies are common, the effects of an elliptical and a spiral galaxy merging are not fully understood. This makes Centaurus A a key subject for learning about galactic evolution.
