The tree has cones that stand up tall. When the cones grow old, they fall apart. This lets the seeds fly away in the wind. The wood has a nice smell. This smell helps keep moths away. People like to plant them in big gardens.

You can find them in the Mediterranean region and the western Himalayas. These trees have a thick, round trunk. Their leaves are like needles. These needles grow in clusters of 15 to 45. They can be bright green or blue-green. A waxy coat on the leaves helps them stay moist.

Cedar trees have both male and female cones. The seed cones are shaped like barrels. They grow upright on the branches. When the cones are mature, they fall apart. This lets the winged seeds fly away in the wind. The seeds also have resin blisters. This resin tastes bad to squirrels. It helps protect the seeds from being eaten.

People have used cedar for a very long time. For over 4,000 years, people used the wood for buildings. The wood smells very good. This scent also helps keep moths away. Many people plant cedars in large gardens. Some people even grow them as bonsai.

These trees have a very interesting way they work. They are monoecious, which means they have both male and female cones on one tree. In the autumn, the pollen cones release pollen into the wind. The female cones are shaped like barrels and grow upright. These cones take one year to grow. When they are ready, they fall apart to release seeds. The seeds have wings to help them fly in the wind.

People have known about cedars for a very long time. The name comes from the Greek word kédros. The English name comes from the Latin word cedrus. A German botanist named Christoph Jacob Trew described them in 1757. We even have fossils of these trees. One fossil is called Cedrus penzhinaensis. It was found in the sediments of Kamchatka, Russia.

There are many facts about how these trees live. The leaves are needles that grow in clusters of 15 to 45. They often have a white waxy coat to stay moist. The seeds have resin blisters that taste bad. This stops squirrels from eating them. In Lebanon, some cedars live in a place called the Cedars of God. This is a World Heritage Site.

Cedars are very useful to people. For over 4,000 years, humans have used the wood. It was used to build grand temples and palaces. The wood has a scent that lasts a long time. This smell actually helps keep moths away. Today, people plant them in large parks. Some people even grow them as tiny bonsai trees.

The genus *Cedrus*, commonly known as cedar, consists of a group of coniferous trees.

These trees belong to the Pinaceae family within the subfamily Abietoideae. They are highly valued for their durable, aromatic wood and their striking appearance. Cedars are native to high-altitude mountain regions. You can find them in the Mediterranean region and the western Himalayas. Because they grow in such specific environments, they are essential parts of their mountain ecosystems.

Cedars have a unique reproductive process because they are monoecious. This means a single tree produces both male and female cones. The process begins in late summer when the tree produces slender, ovoid pollen cones. These cones are about 3 to 8 cm long. In the autumn, they shed pollen into the air to be carried by the wind. At the same time, the female cones begin their development. These seed cones are barrel-shaped and grow upright. They are typically 3 to 8 cm broad. The maturation process takes one full year. After pollination in the autumn, the seeds mature the following year. When the cones reach maturity, they disintegrate. This action releases winged seeds into the wind for dispersal.

The physical structure of a cedar tree changes as it grows. Young trees often have a conical shape with a narrow crown. As they age, the crown may become wider or even irregular. Some individual trees grow so large that several main branches rival the size of the primary trunk. The leaves are evergreen and needle-like. They grow in dense spiral clusters of 15 to 45 needles on short shoots. These needles can appear bright green or a pale, blue-green color. This blue tint comes from a glaucous waxy coat. This wax layer is a vital adaptation that protects the leaves from drying out.

Scientific study of the genus has a long history. The German botanist Christoph Jacob Trew described the genus in 1757. While cedars were once thought to be most closely related to firs (*Abies*), modern genetic evidence shows a different story. They actually hold a basal position within the subfamily Abietoideae. We also know that cedars have a very deep history on Earth. The oldest known fossil is *Cedrus penzhinaensis*. This fossil wood was found in Early Cretaceous sediments in Kamchatka, Russia. Another species, *Cedrus anatolica*, was found as petrified wood in Turkey.

Cedars are incredibly hardy, but they have specific limits. They are adapted to survive summer droughts and winter snow. In the Mediterranean, they rely on winter precipitation. In the Himalayas, they receive summer monsoon rainfall. Most cedars can handle temperatures down to −25 °C. However, the Turkish cedar is even tougher, surviving down to −30 °C. Despite their strength, they face many biological challenges. They can be attacked by fungal diseases like needle blight or root rot. They are also vulnerable to bark beetles during periods of drought. Other pests include scale insects and the pine wilt nematode.

Humanity has used cedar for thousands of years. For over 4,000 years, people have used the wood to build temples and palaces. This is the longest recorded history of any conifer in human use. There is evidence that the Hittite Empire planted cedar populations in Anatolia over 3,200 years ago. They did this specifically to supply wood to their capital, Hattusa. The wood is naturally resistant to decay and has a long-lasting scent. This scent is not just pleasant; it is also a natural repellent to moths. This makes cedar wood very useful for many different purposes.

Today, cedars continue to be important in many ways. They are popular as ornamental trees in large parks and gardens. Because of their shape, they are also frequently trained as bonsai. The seeds have a clever defense mechanism as well. Each seed has two or three resin blisters. These blisters contain a resin that tastes unpleasant. This is believed to be a way to stop squirrels from eating the seeds. This combination of biological defenses and human utility makes the *Cedrus* genus truly remarkable.
