Cavalleria rusticana

Cavalleria rusticana is a famous one-act opera composed by Pietro Mascagni. It is a primary example of verismo, a style of opera that focuses on real life and intense human emotions. The work was based on an 1880 short story and play by the writer Giovanni Verga. Since its debut, it has become a staple of the classical repertoire. It is frequently performed in a "double-bill" alongside Ruggero Leoncavallo's opera, Pagliacci. This pairing is often referred to by musicians as "Cav/Pag."

The creation of the opera involved a high-stakes competition in 1888. The Milanese music publisher Edoardo Sonzogno announced a contest for young Italian composers. To qualify, composers had to have no previous opera performed on stage. They were tasked with writing a one-act opera to be judged by five experts. Mascagni only learned of this opportunity two months before the deadline. He worked with librettists Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci to create the text.

The process of finishing the opera was quite dramatic. The librettists sent the text to Mascagni in small fragments. Sometimes they even wrote verses on the back of postcards. Mascagni felt the work was rushed and did not meet his standards. He grew discouraged and hid the draft in a drawer. However, his wife, Lina Mascagni, found the papers. She submitted the entry on the very last day of the competition.

The story is set in a Sicilian village during the 19th century. The action takes place on an Easter morning. The plot centers on Turiddu, a young man who has returned from military service. He discovers that his former fiancée, Lola, has married a carter named Alfio. In his anger, Turiddu begins an affair with a woman named Santuzza. This leads to a web of jealousy, betrayal, and social dishonor.

As the drama unfolds, the tension reaches a breaking point in the village square. Santuzza reveals Turiddu's affair to Alfio, leading to a deadly confrontation. Following Sicilian custom, the two men engage in a ritualistic embrace. During this, Turiddu bites Alfio's ear to signify a fight to the death. The opera ends in tragedy when the villagers realize Turiddu has been murdered. The music for this intense scene requires a large orchestra. It includes instruments like flutes, oboes, trumpets, trombones, and a variety of percussion.

Cavalleria rusticana premiered on May 17, 1890, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. Although the house was only half full, the performance was a massive sensation. Queen Margherita was in attendance to witness the debut. The audience gave thunderous applause, especially after the performance of the "Siciliana." Mascagni was called to the stage for 40 curtain calls. He was awarded the first prize in the Sonzogno competition.

The opera's success spread rapidly across the globe. It reached Buenos Aires in 1891 and London later that same year. In the United States, it premiered in Philadelphia in September 1891. A notable rivalry occurred in New York City on October 1, 1891. Two different directors, Rudolph Aronson and Oscar Hammerstein, presented performances on the same day. By the time Mascagni died in 1945, the opera had been performed over 14,000 times in Italy alone. It has also been performed over 700 times at the Metropolitan Opera. The work even influenced jazz history. In the 1920s, the legendary Louis Armstrong played a trumpet solo from the opera during a performance in Chicago.
