Castration is any action that causes a male to lose use of the testicles. These parts of the body are called the gonads. This can happen through surgery or by using special drugs.

In medicine, surgical castration is called a bilateral orchiectomy. This means both testicles are removed. Chemical castration uses medicine to deactivate the testes instead. These actions can cause sterilization, which means a person or animal cannot have babies. It also lowers the production of hormones like testosterone and estrogen.

Doctors use these methods to treat certain health problems. For example, it can be used to treat prostate cancer. Doctors use it to slow down the cancer by lowering testosterone. Surgical removal of one or both testicles is also used for testicular cancer. This specific surgery is called an orchidectomy.

In animals, this process is often called neutering. People do this to help animals grow in certain ways. It can also be used to prevent overpopulation. For female animals, a similar medical process is called spaying.

History shows that castration has been used in many different ways. In the Ottoman Empire, eunuchs were men who served in palaces.

In ancient Rome, eunuchs were also used in society. In China, castration was part of the law for a very long time. It was one of five physical punishments for criminals. During the Zhou dynasty, it was part of the legal system. In the Qin dynasty, men were made into state slaves to do hard work. Some of these men worked on projects like the Terracotta Army.

Many different places and times have records of this practice. In the 10th century, the Caliphate in Baghdad had 7,000 black eunuchs and 4,000 white eunuchs. In the 12th century, the kingdom of Georgia saw a man named Demna be castrated. In Korea, the Joseon dynasty had a special department for eunuchs. There were 140 officials who served the palace during that time. In the United States, Thomas Jefferson proposed a bill in Virginia about this. However, that specific bill did not pass for free citizens.

Castration has also been used as a tool in war and power. Some leaders used it to take status away from their rivals. In the Byzantine Empire, a man could not be emperor if he was "blemished." This meant he could not rule. In some wars, it was used to hurt or demoralize enemies.

Some cultures also used it as a punishment for disobeying leaders. Even in modern times, it has been part of legal discussions. It shows how much human history has been shaped by these medical and social actions.
