However, it is hard to see from some parts of Earth. This is because it sits in the southern sky. Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille discovered it in 1752.

Many huge stars live inside this cloud. One star is called Eta Carinae. It is a very massive star. It is much bigger than our Sun.

This star has a small cloud around it. We call this the Homunculus Nebula. It was made during a big outburst in 1841.

New stars are also being made here. We can see tall pillars of gas. One group of pillars is called Mystic Mountain.

Inside these pillars, young stars are forming. The James Webb Space Telescope even took a new photo of a place called the Cosmic Cliffs.

It is a mix of bright and dark clouds of gas and dust. This nebula sits in the Carina constellation. It is part of the Carina–Sagittarius Arm of our Milky Way galaxy. This nebula is one of the largest diffuse nebulas in our sky.

It is actually four times larger than the Orion Nebula. It is also much brighter than that famous nebula. However, it is less well known because it is in the southern sky.

Inside this nebula, many stars are born and live. One way it works is through ongoing star formation. Some star clusters are very young, only half a million years old. The nebula contains many O-type stars and Wolf–Rayet stars. These are very bright and massive stars.

Huge stars like Eta Carinae live here too. This star system is extremely luminous, which means it shines very brightly. In 1841, Eta Carinae had a great eruption. This event created the Homunculus Nebula around the star.

This small cloud is made of gas that was shocked into excited states.

People have studied this nebula for a long time. Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille discovered it on 25 January 1752. He saw it from the Cape of Good Hope.

Later, an astronomy writer named Emma Converse helped name a part of it. She described the Keyhole Nebula in 1873. She said it looked like a keyhole.

Today, we use very advanced tools to see it. The James Webb Space Telescope even chose this nebula for its first official science images. It took a detailed picture of a place called the Cosmic Cliffs.

There are many interesting objects within the nebula. The Trumpler 14 cluster has about 2,000 stars.

The star Eta Carinae is very heavy. It might be 100 to 150 times the mass of our Sun. Its light is about four million times brighter than the Sun. Another object is the Defiant Finger. This is a small cloud of gas and dust. It has a mass of at least 10 solar masses. We can also see the Mystic Mountain.

These are tall pillars of gas and dust that reach high into space.

Looking at the nebula helps us understand how stars work. The nebula shows us how stars are born in gas pillars. It also shows how massive stars can change their surroundings. For example, the radiation from bright stars can evaporate small clouds. This is happening to the Defiant Finger right now. We can see the nebula from about 7,500 light-years away.

This vast area serves as a massive laboratory for studying the life cycles of stars.

Star formation is a continuous and ongoing process within the nebula. The Carina OB1 association is a large group of stars located inside the nebula. This association contains several related open clusters. Some of these clusters are among the youngest known, at only half a million years old. These clusters contain many O-type stars and several Wolf–Rayet stars.

The nebula contains different stages of star birth. Trumpler 15 is located on the north-east edge. Trumpler 16 is a larger and more massive cluster. Trumpler 14 is another main cluster with about 2,000 identified stars.

One of the most significant objects is the Eta Carinae star system. This system contains a highly luminous hypergiant star. Its mass is estimated to be between 100 and 150 times the mass of the Sun. Its luminosity is about four million times that of the Sun.

Massive stars like this flirt with the Eddington limit. This is a point where radiation pressure almost counteracts gravity. If a star exceeds 120 solar masses, its gravity may barely hold its gas. This can result in a supernova or a hypernova. The intense radiation from such stars affects the entire nebula. It can create dark globules with tails pointing away from the star.

In 1841, Eta Carinae experienced a massive event called the Great Eruption. This event created the Homunculus Nebula, which surrounds the star.

The name comes from the Latin word for "Little Man." This feature is a small H II region. It consists of gas shocked into ionized and excited states. The nebula absorbs light from the central system and re-radiates it as infrared light. This makes it the brightest object in the sky at mid-infrared wavelengths. The bipolar lobes have a radius of about 22,000 AU. The system is seen from Earth at an angle of 41 degrees from the line of sight.

Other unique structures exist within the clouds of gas and dust. The Keyhole Nebula is a dark cloud of cold molecules and dust.

It contains bright filaments of hot gas silhouetted against the background. A writer named Emma Converse gave it this name in 1873. Another feature is the "Defiant Finger." This is a small Bok globule within the Keyhole Nebula. It has a mass of at least 10 solar masses. Intense radiation from stars like WR 25 is currently ionizing this cloud. Scientists predict it will evaporate in 200,000 to 1,000,000 years.

Researchers have also identified towering structures like Mystic Mountain.

These are large pillars made of dust and gas. Inside these pillars, nascent stars are forming. These young stars fire off gas jets from their peaks. The James Webb Space Telescope has also studied this region. It captured a detailed image of the Cosmic Cliffs in the NGC 3324 region.

History shows how our understanding of the nebula has grown. Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille discovered the nebula on 25 January 1752. He made this discovery from the Cape of Good Hope. Since then, astronomers have cataloged many specific objects. These include the triple star system HD 93129 and the binary system HD 93205. The nebula remains a vital site for studying how massive stars influence their environment. It connects the study of stellar evolution to the larger structure of our galaxy.
