In the past, planes carried mail. By 1921, the Vickers Vernon carried troops.

Modern planes can carry almost anything. They move cars, food, and even animals. They also help deliver items bought online. This keeps stores full and helps people get things fast.

Some cargo planes are made from old passenger planes. Teams add new doors and strong floors. Other planes are made to be cargo carriers from the start. The Antonov An-225 was the largest cargo plane in the world.

Most of these planes are designed to move items like food, cars, or even animals. They are very important for the world's trade. In fact, air cargo carries over US$6 trillion worth of goods. This makes up about 35% of all world trade by value. These planes help keep store shelves full. They also make it fast to deliver items bought online.

These planes work differently than passenger planes. They often have a wide and tall body to fit big items. Many use a high-wing design so the cargo area stays near the ground. This makes it easier to load things. They also have many wheels to help them land on rough ground. Some planes have a high tail or a large door on the nose. This allows cargo to be driven directly into the plane.

A special ramp can also lift the back of the plane for easy loading.

People have used planes for cargo for a long time. As early as 1911, aircraft were used to carry air mail. In 1921, the Vickers Vernon became the first plane to carry troops.

Later, the Arado Ar 232 became the first aircraft built only for cargo. During the Cold War, the Berlin Airlift used many planes to bring food to West Berlin. This was a huge effort to supply a city by air. Over time, new designs like the C-130 Hercules became very famous.

There are two main ways to get a cargo plane. Some are built as cargo planes from the very start. These are called dedicated freighters. Others are passenger planes that are changed into freighters.

Teams remove the seats and add strong floors. They also install large cargo doors. Converting a Boeing 747-400 can cost about $25 million. This can give an older plane 15 to 20 more years of life.

Today, these planes connect the whole world. The Antonov An-225 was once the largest cargo aircraft in the world.

It could carry very heavy loads over long distances. Even the huge Airbus A380 has been used to carry medical supplies. In 2020, Hi Fly used an A380 to move supplies from China. These planes are vital for many jobs. In the United States, cargo airlines employ over 268,000 workers. They keep the world moving every single day.

Cargo aircraft are fixed-wing airplanes designed specifically to carry goods rather than passengers. These aircraft are essential to the modern global economy. They move everything from perishable food to fully built cars and livestock. By 2015, dedicated freighters made up 43% of the 700 billion available tonne-kilometer (ATK) capacity. The rest of that capacity was carried in the cargo holds of passenger airliners.

To move heavy items, cargo planes use specialized engineering. Many feature a wide or tall fuselage, which is the main body of the aircraft. A high-wing design is often used so the cargo floor sits closer to the ground. This makes loading much easier. Many cargo planes also have numerous wheels to allow them to land at unprepared locations. Some designs include a high-mounted tail so cargo can be driven directly into the plane.

There are different ways to create a cargo fleet. Many freighters are derivatives of passenger aircraft. Specialized engineering teams convert these airliners by installing large main deck cargo doors. They upgrade the floor beams to support heavy loads. They also replace passenger seats with new linings, lighting, and smoke detectors. This process can extend an aircraft's life by 15 to 20 years. For example, converting a Boeing 747-400 might cost $25 million.

Other aircraft are dedicated freighters. These are built from the very beginning to carry cargo without passenger restrictions. NASA conducted a study called the Cargo/Logistics Airlift Systems Study (CLASS) to evaluate these planes. The study found that dedicated cargo aircraft could provide a 20% reduction in trip costs. They could also be 15% cheaper to purchase than other types. However, these benefits depend heavily on fuel costs and the demand for cargo services.

The history of air cargo began with air mail as early as 1911. By the 1920s, manufacturers began building dedicated planes. The Vickers Vernon entered service in 1921 as the first dedicated troop transport. In 1923, it performed the first strategic airlift of troops by flying 500 Sikh soldiers.

During World War II, many nations used the C-47 Skytrain, a cargo version of the Douglas DC-3.

Innovation in loading has changed how these planes work. In 1939, the Junkers Ju 90 introduced a rear loading ramp. This was a powerful hydraulic lift called a Trapoklappe. This ramp raised the rear of the aircraft to allow easy loading. During the Cold War, the Berlin Airlift showed the need for better designs. Older planes like the C-47 were hard to unload. Newer designs used tricycle landing gear to make moving the aircraft easier. This led to the requirement for flat decks in all new cargo designs.

Large-scale transport has evolved into several distinct classes. The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a famous military transport that is still in production today. In the 1960s, "strategic" cargo aircraft emerged, such as the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. These can carry massive loads like main battle tanks across the globe. The Antonov An-225 Mriya was the largest aircraft in the world.

Today, the cargo industry is a massive part of world trade. Air cargo transports over US$6 trillion worth of goods. This accounts for approximately 35% of world trade by value. This industry is also a major employer. In the United States, cargo airlines employed 268,730 workers in August 2023. This helps keep products available on store shelves and supports the growth of online shopping.
