A car has four wheels.

Long ago, people used horses. Then, inventors made cars. One man built a steam car. It used hot steam to move.
Later, people made engines. These engines use fuel to run. This makes the car move. Many cars use this way.
Some cars use electricity. They do not use fuel. These cars are very clean. They are good for the air.
Cars have many parts. They have lights and seats. They can even play music. Cars help us travel every day.

Inventors worked for a long time to make cars. In 1769, Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built a steam-powered vehicle. Later, François Isaac de Rivaz made a car with an internal combustion engine. This is an engine that burns fuel to make power.

In the 1900s, cars became easy to buy. The Ford Model T was one of the first cars made for many people.

Using cars has many different effects on our world.

A car, or an automobile, is a motor vehicle designed with wheels. Most definitions describe cars as vehicles that run primarily on roads. They typically seat between one and eight people. Their main purpose is to transport people rather than heavy cargo. As of 2025, there are over 1.6 billion cars in use across the world. These machines have changed how humans move. They offer on-demand transportation and personal independence. This mobility allows people to travel flexibly from place to place.
Modern cars rely on different types of power to move. Most cars in use during the early 2020s use an internal combustion engine. This engine works through the combustion of fossil fuels. Combustion is a process where fuel burns to create energy.
Vehicles have become much more complex over many decades. Early models were simple, but modern cars have many specialized controls. These controls manage driving, parking, and passenger comfort. They also operate various lamps for visibility.

The history of the car began with steam power. In 1672, Ferdinand Verbiest designed a steam machine for the Kangxi Emperor. It was a scale-model toy and could not carry people.

Internal combustion engines changed everything in the 19th century. In 1807, the Niépce brothers created a device called a Pyréolophore. It used a mixture of coal dust, resin, and Lycopodium powder. In that same year, François Isaac de Rivaz built a vehicle using hydrogen and oxygen. Neither design was successful at the time. The true birth of the modern car happened in 1886.

Mass production made cars available to the general public. In 1901, the Oldsmobile Curved Dash became a mass-produced vehicle. Later, the 1908 Ford Model T became a mass-affordable car.
Using cars involves many different costs and benefits. For an individual, costs include fuel, repairs, and insurance. There are also costs for parking, taxes, and vehicle depreciation.
