Scholars often study his life to understand the deep emotions in his writing. His work captures the transition from prosperity to decline. This theme is central to his literary legacy.

Cao's family history is a story of great power and sudden loss. His ancestors were part of a Han Chinese clan serving Manchu royalty. They were known as *booi aha*, or bondservants, to the Manchu imperial house. The family rose to prominence through military service in the Plain White Banner. They later held civil positions within the Imperial Household Department. This status brought the clan immense prestige and wealth during the Kangxi Emperor's reign.

During the height of his family's influence, Cao's grandfather, Cao Yin, was a close friend of the Kangxi Emperor. The family held the important position of Imperial Textile Commissioner in Jiangning, which is modern-day Nanjing. This role was held by the clan for three consecutive generations. The family was so influential that they hosted the Kangxi Emperor four times during his travels. In 1705, the emperor even tasked Cao Yin with compiling *The Complete Poems of the Tang*.

This period of wealth ended abruptly with the ascension of the Yongzheng Emperor. In 1727, the emperor confiscated the family's properties. A family member named Cao Fu was imprisoned, possibly due to political reasons or mismanagement of funds. Following this purge, the family became impoverished and moved to Beijing. Cao Xueqin lived through this difficult transition from a life of luxury to one of poverty. He eventually settled in the countryside west of Beijing to live out his later years.

Cao Xueqin used these personal experiences to fuel his creative output. He spent roughly ten years working diligently on the manuscript for *Dream of the Red Chamber*. The novel is considered semi-autobiographical because it recreates the rise and fall of an illustrious family.
