It is located in the Alpes-Maritimes department. This area is part of the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region. The city is a major center for international events and luxury tourism. It is well known for its association with famous people and high-end hotels. Cannes also hosts many large-scale conferences and global festivals. The city serves as a vital hub for business, trade, and aviation in the region.

The history of Cannes began long ago with the Ligurian Oxybii. By the 2nd century BC, they established a settlement called Aegitna. Historians think the name might relate to the Greek word for waves or surf. Later, the town was known as Canua, which may come from the word for reed. In the 10th century, Saracen attacks devastated the area around Canua. This insecurity forced monks to move from the Lérins Islands to the mainland. They settled at Le Suquet and built a castle in 1035 to protect the city.

Cannes underwent a massive transformation during the 19th century. In 1838, Henry Brougham built the Villa Eleonore-Louise on the coast. At that time, Cannes was mostly a small fishing village. Brougham's work improved living conditions and attracted the English aristocracy. These wealthy visitors built many winter residences in the area. Later, leaders like Marie de Lametz helped modernize the city. They wanted to follow the success of nearby Nice and its gambling industry. By the late 1860s, the city expanded its casinos, hotels, and railway connections.

The climate in Cannes is a subtropical Mediterranean climate.
