It is known for being a "freemium" game. This means people can play it for free. However, players can also choose to buy special items. These items can help them pass through very hard levels. The game is part of a large series. Other titles include Candy Crush Soda Saga and Candy Crush Jelly Saga. Many people enjoy playing it for just a few minutes each day.

Playing the game is easy to learn but takes skill. You look at a board filled with many colored candies. To play, you swap two candies that are next to each other. Your goal is to make a row or column of three or more matching colors. When you do this, those candies disappear from the board. New candies then fall from the top to fill the empty spaces. This can start a chain reaction called a cascade. These cascades help you earn even more points.

Sometimes you can make very special candies during a match. If you match four or more candies, you create a power-up. These special candies can clear a whole row or a column. Each level has its own unique goal to reach. You might have to clear jelly from certain tiles. You might also need to move special ingredients to the bottom. You must reach these goals within a fixed number of moves. If you succeed, you earn stars and move to the next level.

This game has a long history of growth. The company King first released it on Facebook on April 12, 2012. It started with only 65 levels at the beginning. Later, King released versions for iOS and Android mobile devices. By 2014, over 93 million people were playing the game. It has become one of the most-played mobile apps ever. As of September 2023, the game has earned over $20 billion in total revenue. This shows how much people around the world love it.

Candy Crush Saga connects to other games you might know. It uses ideas from an earlier game called Miner Speed. It also uses a "saga" style first seen in Bubble Witch Saga. In a saga game, you must finish levels in a specific order. This makes the game feel like a long journey through a map. You also meet many fun characters along the way. You might see Tiffi, who solves problems in the Candy Kingdom. You might also meet Mr. Toffee or the villainous Bubblegum Troll.
