This range sits inside the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. To the east, the mountains meet the flat Canadian Prairies. To the west, they sit next to the Rocky Mountain Trench.

They are part of a much larger chain called the North American Cordillera. This massive system of mountains stretches from Alaska all the way down to Mexico. The Canadian Rockies are the easternmost part of this great mountain group.

These mountains look very different from the American Rockies to the south. The Canadian peaks are often very jagged and sharp. This happened because huge sheets of ice, called glaciers, carved the land. These glaciers made wide, U-shaped valleys between the peaks.

The area is also cooler and wetter than many other places. This extra moisture makes the soil damp and the rivers very large. The mountains are made of layered rocks like limestone and shale. This is different from the granite and gneiss found in the southern ranges.

Mount Robson is the highest peak in the entire Canadian Rockies. It sits near the Yellowhead Pass and the Yellowhead Highway. Mount Columbia is the second highest peak in the range. It is also the highest mountain found in Alberta. There is even a place called Snow Dome. Water from Snow Dome flows into three different oceans. It travels to the Pacific, the Arctic, and the Atlantic oceans.

Water is a very important part of this landscape. The Rockies act as a divide for many river systems. Some rivers flow west toward the Pacific Ocean. Other rivers flow east toward the Arctic Ocean or Hudson Bay.

Many big rivers start in these mountains. These include the Fraser, Columbia, Bow, and Athabasca rivers. Only one river, the Peace River, actually goes through the mountain range. These rivers help bring life to the lands far away from the peaks.

People have long visited and worked in these mountains. Building the Canadian Pacific Railway was a very hard job. Workers had to cross steep passes and fast rivers to link the provinces. Today, much of this beautiful land is protected in national parks.

They consist of the Alberta Rockies and the British Columbian Rockies. This range represents the easternmost section of the Canadian Cordillera. The Cordillera is a massive system of interconnected mountain ranges. It stretches from central Alaska in the northwest to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico. The Canadian Rockies sit between the Canadian Prairies to the east and the Liard Plain to the northeast. To the west, they are bounded by the Rocky Mountain Trench.

Geologically, the Canadian Rockies are defined by their unique composition. They are made primarily of layered sedimentary rocks. These include limestone and shale. This differs from the American Rockies to the south. The American ranges consist mostly of metamorphic and igneous rocks like granite and gneiss. The Canadian peaks appear more jagged than their southern neighbors. This is due to heavy glaciation. Glaciers have carved the landscape into sharply pointed mountains. They have also created wide, U-shaped valleys. In contrast, the American Rockies have more rounded peaks and V-shaped valleys carved by rivers.

The range is divided into two main groupings. These are the Northern Rockies and the Continental Ranges. The Northern Rockies include the Muskwa and Hart Ranges. The Continental Ranges are subdivided into three parts. These are the Front Range, the Park Ranges, and the Kootenay Ranges. The division between the two main groups occurs at Monkman Pass. This pass is northwest of Mount Robson. The McGregor River valley and the Kakwa River valley also separate these regions.

It sits on the continental divide near Yellowhead Pass. Mount Columbia is the second-highest peak. It is also the highest mountain in the province of Alberta. Another significant location is Snow Dome. Snow Dome is one of two hydrological apexes in North America. This means water flowing from it travels to three different watersheds. It flows into the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean via Hudson Bay.

The mountains serve as a vital water source for the continent. They form a divide between different drainage systems. Water on the west flows toward the Pacific Ocean. Water on the east flows toward the Arctic Ocean or Hudson Bay. Many major rivers originate in these mountains. These include the Fraser, Columbia, North Saskatchewan, Bow, and Athabasca Rivers. Interestingly, only the Peace River actually penetrates the mountain range itself. The climate here is cooler and wetter than in the south. This leads to moister soil, larger rivers, and more glaciers.

Human history in the region includes significant engineering feats. The Canadian Pacific Railway was founded to connect British Columbia to eastern provinces. Building this railway was a massive challenge. Workers faced treacherous mountain passes and fast rivers. They also had to deal with sheer drops during construction. Today, much of the area is protected for its natural beauty. Five national parks are located within the Canadian Rockies. Four of these are adjacent: Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, and Yoho.

Conservation efforts have helped preserve these unique landscapes. In 1984, a group of parks was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This includes the four adjacent national parks and three provincial parks in British Columbia.

Other provincial parks include Hamber, Mount Assiniboine, and Mount Robson parks. The Alpine Club of Canada maintains several alpine huts. These huts provide shelter for mountaineers and adventurers. These mountains remain a central part of the North American Cordillera and the Pacific Ring of Fire.
