Cabo San Lucas is a major resort city located at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. It sits within the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. The city is part of a larger metropolitan area known as Los Cabos. This area includes the neighboring city of San José del Cabo. Together, these two cities house 351,111 inhabitants. Cabo San Lucas is a primary center for tourism in Mexico.

It is famous for its diverse marine life and beautiful coastal scenery.

The local environment is defined by a tropical desert climate, known scientifically as BWh. This climate means the region is generally warm and dry. There are no freezes in this part of the peninsula. During the summer, the sea temperature rises to about 29.5 °C (85 °F). In the winter, the water cools to around 21.5 °C (70.6 °F). While the area is mostly dry, hurricanes can bring heavy rain. For example, Hurricane Odile made landfall there in September 2014.

The geography of the area includes semi-arid deserts, mountains, and coastal plains. One of the most famous landmarks is the sea arch called El Arco de Cabo San Lucas. This natural formation is located at Lands End.

The waters surrounding the city are rich with biological diversity. You can find rays, sharks, and mahi-mahi in the ocean. Striped marlin are also common in these waters. In the winter, pods of whales travel from Alaska and Siberia. They use the warm Gulf of California to bear their calves.

Human history in this region spans many thousands of years. Archaeological excavations show people lived here for at least 10,000 years. When Europeans first arrived, they met the Pericú people. The Pericú practiced subsistence living through hunting and gathering. They collected seeds, roots, and shellfish from the sea. They called this specific location Yenecamú. Later, a fishing village began to grow in the area.

Cipriano Ceseña, arriving from Hermosillo, Sonora, is considered the actual founder in 1788.

The modern tourism industry began to expand rapidly in the late 20th century. In 1974, the Mexican government started building infrastructure to promote tourism. A major part of this was the Transpeninsular Highway, or Mexican Federal Highway 1. This road connected the region and allowed more visitors to arrive. In 1917, an American company even built a floating platform to catch tuna. By the 1880s, the city was already part of several steamship lines.

This shows how the area has been connected to the world for a long time.

Today, Cabo San Lucas is a massive destination for international travelers. The Los Cabos International Airport serves as a main gateway. In 2022, the airport received more than 3.3 million visitors. This represented a 32% compounded growth over the previous five years. Many people also arrive via large cruise ships that visit the sizable marina.

Visitors can explore the center of town at Puerto Paraiso. Some travelers enjoy the Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore tournament every October. This is the highest-paying marlin tournament in the world.

Rapid development has brought both growth and environmental challenges. Many resorts and timeshares now line the Los Cabos Corridor. Previously, the fragile desert and marine ecosystems were not well protected by law. Now, groups like the Gulf of California Conservation Fund work to protect these habitats. They challenge the destruction of wetlands and coastlines. Some high-end resorts are now practicing ecological stewardship. They focus on reducing water usage and non-recyclable trash. This helps balance the needs of tourism with the health of the natural world.
