His work redefined city skylines across the globe. Pelli viewed architecture as a way to shape the modern urban experience. His designs often focused on how large structures interact with their surroundings. Through his firm, he created buildings that serve as both functional spaces and artistic icons.

The process of designing a skyscraper involves complex technical and aesthetic choices. Pelli was known for experimenting with diverse materials to achieve specific visual effects. One of his favorite materials was stainless steel. He used this metal to create reflective surfaces that changed with the light.

He also utilized bold colors to give buildings unique identities. For example, the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood features three distinct colored buildings. These are the Blue, Green, and Red buildings.

The blue building was so famous locally that people called it the "Blue Whale."

Pelli's professional career featured several distinct stages of growth. He began by working for the famous architect Eero Saarinen for ten years. During this time, he contributed to projects like the TWA terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Later, he moved into leadership roles in Los Angeles. In 1964, he became the director of design at Daniel, Mann, Johnson and Mendenhall. By 1968, he was a partner for design at Gruen Associates. These roles helped him transition from an assistant to a leading designer.

His life and education began in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina. He was born there on October 12, 1926. His father worked as a civil servant, while his mother was a teacher.

Pelli studied architecture at the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán and graduated in 1949. He moved to the United States in 1952 to pursue advanced studies. He attended the University of Illinois School of Architecture. In 1954, he earned his Master of Science in Architecture degree. This move to the U.S. set the stage for his international career.

As his reputation grew, Pelli took on massive, high-profile commissions. In 1977, he became the dean of the Yale School of Architecture. While at Yale, he won the contract to renovate the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This project led him to establish his own firm, Cesar Pelli & Associates. His firm eventually became Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. This name change happened after his son, Rafael Pelli, joined the firm as a principal.

Pelli's work reached incredible heights and scales. The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, are among his most famous works. These twin towers were sheathed in stainless steel and featured Islamic design motifs.

They held the title of the world's tallest buildings until 2004. In the United States, he designed the Salesforce Tower in San Francisco and the World Financial Center in New York. He also designed the 730-foot FMC Tower in Philadelphia. These structures demonstrate his ability to manage immense scale and complexity.

The significance of his talent is reflected in numerous prestigious awards. In 1991, the American Institute of Architects named him one of the ten most influential living American architects. He received the AIA Gold Medal in 1995.
