Burns are grouped by how deep they go. A first-degree burn only hits the top layer. These look red and are painful.

A second-degree burn goes deeper. These often have blisters. They can be very painful and take weeks to heal.

Third-degree burns go through all skin layers. The area might feel stiff or even painless. Fourth-degree burns are the deepest. They can reach muscle or bone. These burns often look black.

Most burns can be prevented. If a burn happens, doctors can help. Small burns might just need rest. Big burns need special care in a burn center.
