Burebista was a powerful king of the Getae and Dacian tribes. He ruled from approximately 82/61 BC until his death around 45/44 BC. He is best known for being the first leader to successfully unify the various Dacian tribes. This unified kingdom occupied a large area between the Danube, Tisza, and Dniester rivers. This region corresponds to the modern-day countries of Romania and Moldova.

Before Burebista's reign, the Dacian people lived in a region influenced by the La Tène Celts. From the 4th century to the middle of the 2nd century BC, these Celts introduced new technologies. These included the potter's wheel and advanced metal-working techniques. The Dacians may have even learned traditions of minting coins from them. Eventually, the Dacians expelled the Celts from their lands. This allowed the Dacian culture to mature and grow through population and economic expansion.

Burebista established a stable monarchy that functioned as a centralized political structure. While some archaeologists debate the exact level of centralization, others point to clear regional trends. To secure his people, Burebista built a system of stone fortifications in the Orăștie Mountains. These important hill forts, or citadels, were built on high ground. Examples of these sites include the villages of Costești, Blidaru, Piatra Roșie, and Bănița. These structures used Greek military architecture to provide internal security.

Around 61 BC, Burebista began a series of military campaigns to expand his territory. He first targeted the Boii and Taurisci tribes in the Middle Danube region. These tribes lived in what is now modern Bohemia and Slovakia. He also destroyed the Bastarnae people and likely conquered the Scordisci. By 55 BC, his influence reached the Black Sea coast. He annexed several Greek cities, including Olbia, Tyras, Histria, and Tomis.

Burebista's growing power eventually brought him into conflict with the Roman Republic. During the Roman civil war of 49–44 BC, Burebista supported the leader Pompey. An ambassador named Akornion helped facilitate this connection. Because of this alliance, Burebista became an enemy of Julius Caesar. Caesar viewed the growing strength of Dacia as a threat to Rome. Some sources suggest Burebista could command a force of up to 200,000 men.

Both major leaders met violent ends in the same period. Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC. Around that same time, Burebista was killed in a plot by the Dacian aristocracy. These nobles believed that a centralized state reduced their own personal privileges. Following his death, the empire he created quickly dissolved. The kingdom broke into four parts ruled by religious elites. By the time of the emperor Augustus, Dacia had split into five separate parts.

For many years after Burebista, Dacian activity was mostly defensive. During the reigns of the Roman emperors Tiberius and Domitian, the Dacians focused on keeping Rome at bay. However, Dacian power eventually resurged under King Decebalus in 86 AD. Decebalus successfully re-united the kingdom. This led to renewed conflict with Rome. The emperor Trajan eventually launched two conquests between 101 and 106 AD. The second invasion finally ended the independence of the Dacian kingdom.
