Making a puppet is a very careful job.

Learning to be a master puppeteer takes a very long time. It is a journey that requires much patience. A person usually starts by learning to move the feet. They might spend ten years just working on the feet. Then, they spend ten years learning to move the left hand. Finally, they spend another ten years working on secondary characters. Only after thirty years of training can they move to the head of a main character.
Bunraku has a long and rich history in Japan.
The music and the story are just as important as the puppets.

Moving a puppet in Bunraku is a complex mechanical process.

Puppet construction involves specialized craftsmanship and mechanical sophistication. The heads, or ningyo, are carved by experts and can be very complex. There are approximately 80 types of heads, though some digital libraries list 129 types. Some heads feature mechanical tricks to show supernatural changes. For example, a beautiful woman's face can instantly transform into a demon with fangs and horns. Other heads can split in two to show a character has been struck by a sword.
Training to become a master is a lifelong commitment.
Bunraku has a rich history rooted in the 17th century.
The auditory experience is driven by the tayu and the shamisen player.

Bunraku remains an active and global art form.
