Bukavu has a long and changing history. It was part of the ancient Bushi Kingdom. Long ago, the area was called Rusozi. The name Bukavu comes from the Mashi word 'bu 'nkafu', which means a farm of cows.

To the west, the Ruzizi River separates Bukavu from Cyangugu in Rwanda. This location makes the city a vital gateway to eastern Congo. The urban population was estimated at 1,133,000 people in 2021. This growth follows a 2012 estimate of 806,940 inhabitants.

The physical geography of Bukavu creates a very distinct landscape. The city is built upon five peninsulas that extend into the water. Some observers describe the shape as a green hand dipped in the lake.

The surrounding hills reach heights of up to 2,000 metres. Because of this high altitude, the climate is a tropical savanna. However, the weather is milder than other tropical regions. The city experiences very warm days and pleasant nights throughout the year.

Bukavu's architecture reflects its complex history under different rulers. During Belgian colonial rule, many art deco buildings were constructed.

There are over 100 of these historic structures in the city. Many colonial villas feature gardens that slope down toward the lakeshore. In contrast, the Kadutu district serves as a residential area for ordinary people. This district climbs steeply up the hillsides further inland. Efforts have been proposed to preserve the art deco buildings for tourism.

The history of the area begins with the ancient Bushi Kingdom. This territory was home to the Bashi ethnic group. Before European arrival, the area was known as Rusozi. The name Bukavu comes from the Mashi word 'bu 'nkafu'. This term translates to a farm of cows. The Congo Free State established the city in 1901. In 1927, the name was changed to Costermansville after Paul Costermans. The city reverted to its original name, Bukavu, in 1953.

Conflict has significantly impacted the city and its social structure. Following the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, Hutu refugees fled into the region. This contributed to the Great Lakes refugee crisis. The area became a center for insurgency and various wars. These include the First Congo War and the Second Congo War. In 2004, protestors demonstrated against the United Nations in Bukavu. They felt the UN failed to prevent the city from falling to RCD forces. More recently, M23 rebels entered the city in February 2025.

Despite these challenges, Bukavu remains an important center for medicine and education. The city hosts many schools and universities, such as the Université Catholique de Bukavu. Panzi Hospital is a very notable medical institution.

Founded in 1921, it provides critical care for survivors of sexual violence. The hospital is a teaching facility for the Evangelical University in Africa. Additionally, the Pharmakina factory is a major employer. It produces the antimalarial drug quinine and the AIDS medicament Afri-vir.

Transportation in Bukavu is shaped by the local terrain and history. The road network has deteriorated due to years of war. This isolation can affect wealth and development in the South Kivu region. Because of poor roads, many people rely on boat transport. Numerous lakeside wharves allow for travel across the water. The city also uses Kavumu Airport, located 30 kilometres to the north. The city is also near the Kahuzi-Biéga National Park.
