The Buckingham Canal is a long path of fresh water. 
People first built a part of it in 1806. It was once called Cochrane's Canal. Later, it was named after the Duke of Buckingham. For a long time, boats moved many goods along the water. But then, trains and roads became more popular. This made the canal less important for many years.
Today, the canal faces many problems. Some parts are dirty from sewage and waste.

Even with these problems, the canal is still very useful. It can act as a buffer zone to protect people. A buffer zone is a space that softens a big impact. During the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the canal helped regulate large waves. The water filled the canal and then receded back to the sea in 10 to 15 minutes.

They extended the canal north toward Pulicat Lake and south toward Marakkanam. For a short time, it was also called Lord Clive's Canal. The canal finally received its current name in 1878. This was named in honor of the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, who ordered a specific link to be built.
Construction of the canal has often been tied to major historical events. Between 1877 and 1878, a terrible Great Famine occurred in Chennai. During this time, more than six million people perished. To provide relief work during the famine, a stretch linking the Adyar and Cooum rivers was built. This work cost 4.5 lakh rupees. Later, during the Second Five Year Plan, the central government contributed 115 lakhs of rupees to develop the canal. This funding aimed to link the canal with the Madras harbour to supplement railway capacity. 
Despite its importance, the canal has faced significant decline in recent decades. The rise of railways and road transport reduced its use for moving goods. Cyclones in 1965, 1966, and 1976 caused physical damage to the structure. In Chennai, the water has become badly polluted by sewage and industrial effluents. The North Chennai Thermal Power Station discharges fly ash and hot water into the canal. Currently, nearly 60 percent of the 55 million litres of untreated sewage entering the city's waterways is let into the canal daily. This pollution and silting can create habitats for mosquitoes that spread malaria.
The canal also serves a critical role as a buffer zone during natural disasters. A buffer zone is a space that helps reduce the impact of a force. Dr. B. Ramalingeswara Rao identified this during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. During that event, the canal acted as a regulator for the tsunami waves. The canal filled with tsunami water, which then receded back to the sea within 10 to 15 minutes. This process helped save the lives of many fishermen in Andhra Pradesh and Chennai. 
Modern efforts are now focused on the rehabilitation and restoration of the canal. The Indian government declared the canal part of National Waterway 4 in November 2008. This plan involves developing both the North and South Buckingham sections. In Chennai, the Chennai River Restoration Trust was formed in 2010 to help restore the waterways. Some projects have focused on widening the South Buckingham Canal from Okkiyam Madu to Muttukadu. These improvements aim to use the canal as a macro drainage system to prevent flooding. By cleaning and deepening the channel, officials hope to turn the canal back into a useful asset for the region.
