Bruschetta

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bruschetta is a tasty snack from Italy. It is an antipasto, which is a small starter food. To make it, people grill slices of bread. They rub the bread with garlic. Then they add olive oil and salt.

This food has a very long history. Some say it is as old as olive oil. In ancient Rome, people ate bread soaked in oil. They might even rub it with garlic. Long ago, people used this way to save bread. It helped them use bread that was getting stale.

There are many ways to eat it. In Tuscany, people make fettunta. This is a greasy slice of bread. They eat it in November to taste new oil. In Abruzzo, they use ventricina. This is a spicy pork paste. Other people use beans, cheese, or fish roe. In America, many people think bruschetta is just a tomato topping. But in Italy, it is the grilled bread itself. It is a dish that people love to share.
