The city had a special water path called the Zwin. This path helped ships reach the city from the sea. Later, the path filled with sand and silt. This made it harder for big ships to come.

Today, many people visit Bruges to see its history. The old city center is a special World Heritage Site.

It is famous for its beautiful old buildings. The city also has a big port at Zeebrugge.
