It is often light or medium brown. One special mark sits on its head. This mark looks like a violin. Because of this, some people call it a fiddleback spider.

Most spiders have eight eyes. The brown recluse only has six eyes. These eyes sit in three pairs. This spider likes dry, dark places. It might hide in a closet, a garage, or a woodpile. They often like cardboard too. This is because it feels like rotting tree bark.

This spider is not mean. It usually tries to run away if it feels scared. It might even play dead. A bite usually happens by accident. This occurs if the spider is pressed against your skin. It might be inside a shoe or a towel.

Their venom can be dangerous. It can cause loxoscelism. This is a condition where the skin around a bite dies. This can lead to deep scars. Most bites are actually minor. However, some bites can make a person feel very sick. They might have a fever or feel sick to their stomach.
