Brown is a dark color. It often looks like dark orange. You can make it by mixing colors. In art, you mix red, yellow, and blue. In printing, you mix yellow with magenta and black. On computer screens, red and green light make brown.

We see brown in nature everywhere. It is in soil, wood, and rocks. Many animals have brown fur or feathers. This helps them hide in their homes. This is called camouflage. Many humans also have brown hair, skin, or eyes.

Artists have used brown for a very long time. People used umber to paint 40,000 years ago. Umber is a type of brown clay. It comes from the earth. Some artists even used ink from cuttlefish. This ink is called sepia.

In the past, brown was a color for poor people. In the Middle Ages, monks wore brown robes. This showed they were humble. Later, artists used new browns to make paintings look real. They used earth colors like sienna. These colors come from clay found in Italy.
