A supplier provided inferior-quality wire, which reduced the bridge's calculated strength. John Roebling had designed the truss system to be six to eight times stronger than necessary. Even with the lower-quality wire, the bridge remained four times stronger than required.

Over the decades, the Brooklyn Bridge has changed to meet the needs of the city. It once carried horse-drawn vehicles and elevated trains. Today, it only allows passenger vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles.
