Brooklyn is a major borough of New York City.

It is located at the western end of Long Island. The borough is coextensive with Kings County. This means the borders of the borough and the county are the same. Brooklyn shares a land border with the borough of Queens. To the west, the East River separates Brooklyn from Manhattan. Travelers can cross the river using several tunnels and bridges. One famous example is the architecturally significant Brooklyn Bridge.

Another major connection is the Verrazzano–Narrows Bridge, which links Brooklyn to Staten Island.

Brooklyn is a very crowded place to live. As of 2022, Kings County was the most populous county in New York state. It is also the second most densely populated county in the United States. Only Manhattan, also known as New York County, is more densely populated. In the 2020 census, the population reached 2,736,074 people.

While it is very crowded, it is also quite small in size. Kings County is the fourth-smallest county in New York by land area. It is the third-smallest by total area when including water.

The name Brooklyn has deep roots in history. It is derived from the Dutch town of Breukelen in the Netherlands. The name comes from the Dutch words "broeck," meaning bog or marshland, and "lede," meaning a small water stream. This describes the peat areas where the settlement was founded. The original Breuckelen settlement was established in 1646. Over time, the spelling of the name changed many times. Variations included Breucklyn, Brucklyn, and even Brookline. The name Kings County was chosen later. It was named after King Charles II of England.

European settlement began in the 17th century. The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle this part of Long Island. At that time, the land was inhabited by the Lenape. The Lenape were an Algonquian-speaking American Indian tribe. The Dutch established six original parishes in the area. These included Brooklyn Heights, Flatbush, and Bushwick. In 1664, the English conquered New Netherland. This led to the area becoming part of the Province of New York. Kings County was officially partitioned as one of the twelve original counties in 1683.

Brooklyn was the site of a major historical event during the American Revolution. The Battle of Long Island took place on August 27, 1776. This was the first major battle after independence was declared. It was also the largest battle of the entire war.

British troops forced George Washington's Continental Army off the heights. These heights included areas near modern Green-Wood Cemetery and Prospect Park. Washington managed a brilliant tactical withdrawal across the East River. Despite this, the British controlled the region for the rest of the war. They even used prison ships in Wallabout Bay, where many American prisoners died.

Brooklyn used to be an independent city. This changed due to a massive political movement in the 1890s. On January 1, 1898, Brooklyn was consolidated into the City of Greater New York. This joined Brooklyn with Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. The decision was very controversial among local residents. Many did not want to lose their independent identity. The issue was decided by a public referendum. The consolidation won by a very thin margin. There were 64,744 votes for joining and 64,467 votes against.

Today, Brooklyn is known for its distinct culture and diverse neighborhoods. Many areas serve as ethnic enclaves.

Brooklyn's identity is captured in its official symbols. The borough seal and flag feature the motto "Een Draght Maekt Maght." This is early modern Dutch for "In unity there is strength."

This motto reflects the history of the different areas coming together. Even as the borough changes through gentrification and new developments, it remains a vital part of the New York City system. It continues to balance its long history with its role as a modern center for entrepreneurship and design.
