Its name means "thunder lizard" in Greek. This animal lived in the United States a long time ago. It lived during the Late Jurassic period. This was about 156 to 146 million years ago.

Many people know this dinosaur from movies and books. It is often seen as the classic long-necked dinosaur. Scientists group it in a family called Diplodocidae. This group of dinosaurs had long tails and shorter necks. They lived in the Morrison Formation in Utah and Wyoming.

This dinosaur had a very specific way of moving and eating. It was a quadruped, which means it walked on four legs.

Its front legs were short and stout. Its back legs were long and thick. The neck was very strong and heavily built. This helped it reach plants in many places. The tail was also very long. It ended in a structure that looked like a whip.

These large animals grew very quickly. Young ones could reach their full adult size in just 15 years.

A scientist named Othniel Charles Marsh first described it in 1879.

He found a partial skeleton in Como Bluff, Wyoming. The first species he named was Brontosaurus excelsus. Later, other species were named, like B. parvus in 1902. Another was named B. yahnahpin in 1994. Marsh was a professor at Yale University. He was part of a famous rivalry called the Bone Wars. This rivalry was a race to find and name fossils. Because of this race, many descriptions were written very quickly.

There are many interesting facts about the size of these animals.

The largest kind, B. excelsus, could reach 75 feet long. It could weigh as much as 30 tons. The smaller species, B. parvus, was much shorter. Scientists have studied many different bones to learn these sizes. Some fossils show the thick bones of the shoulder and pelvis. These bones helped support the huge weight of the dinosaur.

Even the small bones of the neck were very strong.

For many years, scientists thought the Brontosaurus was just an Apatosaurus. They thought the two names were the same thing.

However, a study in 2015 by Emmanuel Tschopp changed this. His team found that Brontosaurus was actually a different genus. Some scientists still debate this today. The Brontosaurus lived alongside many other famous creatures. It shared its home with the Stegosaurus and the Allosaurus.
