Broadway theatre is a specific genre of professional live performance. It consists of theatrical shows presented in 41 professional venues in New York City. These theaters are located in the Theater District and at Lincoln Center. To be classified as a Broadway venue, a theater must have at least 500 seats.

Together with London's West End, Broadway represents the highest commercial level of English-speaking theater. While the term refers to the genre, only three theaters sit on Broadway itself. These are the Broadway Theatre, the Palace Theatre, and the Winter Garden Theatre. Most other venues sit on numbered cross streets in Midtown Manhattan.

The industry is organized into different tiers based on venue size. Broadway venues are the largest, with at least 500 seats. Smaller venues in New York are called off-Broadway. Very small venues with fewer than 100 seats are called off-off-Broadway. This term can also describe non-commercial or avant-garde productions. These smaller stages often host shows outside of traditional theater venues. This tiered system allows for many different types of storytelling and artistic expression.

Broadway is a massive economic and cultural force. In the 2022–2023 season, Broadway shows sold tickets worth approximately US$1.54 billion. This high level of sales was repeated during the 2023–2024 season. Approximately 12.3 million people attended Broadway shows during a single season. Most of these productions are musicals. Historian Martin Shefter notes that Broadway musicals became enormously influential in American popular culture. These shows helped establish New York City as a global cultural capital.

The history of New York theater began in the mid-18th century. Around 1750, Walter Murray and Thomas Kean ran a company at the Theatre on Nassau Street. This early venue held about 280 people and performed Shakespearean plays. After the Revolutionary War, theater resumed with the construction of the Park Theatre in 1798.

This new venue was much larger, seating 2,000 people. By the 1820s, other major venues like the Bowery Theatre and Niblo's Garden appeared. These early spaces offered various musical and non-musical entertainments to the city.

As the city grew, theater moved from Lower Manhattan toward Midtown around 1850. This move was driven by the search for less expensive real estate. The heart of the theater scene shifted from Union Square toward Madison Square by the end of the 19th century. Eventually, theaters consolidated in the Times Square area during the 1920s and 1930s. A major milestone occurred on September 12, 1866, with the premiere of The Black Crook.

This production is considered by some historians to be the first modern musical. It lasted five-and-a-half hours and ran for 474 performances.

Musical theater evolved through many different styles and influences. In the late 1800s, musical comedies began to feature professional singers instead of amateurs. Shows like The Mulligan Guard Picnic featured characters from the everyday lives of New Yorkers. African American performers also made significant contributions to the genre. A Trip to Coontown in 1898 was the first musical comedy produced entirely by African Americans on Broadway.

Later, composers in Tin Pan Alley wrote many hits that defined the Broadway sound.

Recognition of talent is central to the Broadway community. The Tony Awards are presented annually by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League. These awards recognize excellence in live Broadway theater. They serve as the industry's equivalent to the Emmy Awards for television or the Academy Awards for film. Only productions that open in designated Broadway theaters are eligible for a Tony.
