The development of this literature follows the changing history of the islands. Before the Anglo-Saxon invasion around AD 450, inhabitants spoke various Celtic languages. The Anglo-Saxons brought the beginnings of the English language. Later, the Norman Conquest in 1066 introduced Anglo-Norman literature. This brought new styles from Continental Europe, such as the chanson de geste. These were songs or tales about heroic deeds. The different groups joined the United Kingdom at different times. Wales was annexed in the 16th century. The Kingdom of Great Britain formed in 1707 through a treaty. In 1801, it merged with Ireland to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

Early English literature is often called Anglo-Saxon or Old English literature. This period lasted from about AD 450 until shortly after 1066. Most of these works were part of an oral tradition. This means they were written to be performed out loud. There are about 400 surviving manuscripts from this era. These works include epic poetry, sermons, and legal texts. The most famous work is Beowulf, an epic poem set in Scandinavia. Most authors from this time are anonymous. We only know twelve names from medieval sources. Only four are certain, including the poet Cædmon and the scholar Bede.

This is an allegorical poem written in unrhymed alliterative verse. Geoffrey Chaucer is often called the Father of English literature. He was the greatest poet of the Middle Ages. Literature in Britain has always been a multilingual effort. In the 14th century, many people knew several languages. For example, John Gower wrote poems in Anglo-Norman, Latin, and Middle English. This shows how diverse the reading audience was. Women were also active writers during this time. Marie de France wrote in the 12th century. Julian of Norwich wrote Revelations of Divine Love around 1393. Her work is believed to be the first published book by a woman in English. This diversity helped make British literature innovative and unique.

Because Britain was a colonial power, English spread across the globe. By the 19th century, major writers in English appeared in the United States. Later, writers in other former colonies also used the language. Many of these international writers became Nobel laureates. Today, the United Kingdom publishes more books per capita than any other country. The literature continues to grow through many different voices and cultures. It remains a central part of the identity of the islands and the wider world.
