In 2010, the Academy spent £2.75m to fix and link its buildings. This project added a new 150-seat Wolfson Auditorium. Today, more than 1,000 leading scholars are members. These members are called Fellows and can use the letters FBA. The Academy also receives much of its money from the government.

Social science sections include Law, Economics, Anthropology, and Sociology. Even fields like Psychology and Management are represented within the Fellowship.

The history of the Academy began with a proposal in 1899. Leaders wanted Britain to be represented at meetings with European and American academies. The organization started as an unincorporated society on 17 December 1901. On 8 August 1902, King Edward VII granted it a Royal Charter.

Since its founding, many famous thinkers have been involved. These include the economist John Maynard Keynes and the author C. S. Lewis. Over the years, the Academy has moved several times. It moved from Burlington Gardens to Burlington House, and then to its current home.

The Academy is currently based at 10–11 Carlton House Terrace in London. This location overlooks St James's Park and features buildings designed by John Nash. Number 11 was once the home of Prime Minister William Gladstone.

In March 2010, the Academy began a £2.75m renovation project. This work restored the public rooms in Number 11 and linked the two buildings. The project was completed in January 2011. It created the new 150-seat Wolfson Auditorium for conferences and events.

Funding is essential for the Academy to support its massive research goals. Much of its money comes from annual government grants. In 2022, the Academy had a total charitable income of £51.7m. Of that amount, £49.3m came from the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. The Academy also uses private funds from gifts and legacies. It channels this money into research career development and international engagement. In 2014/15, the Academy provided around £30m to support research and researchers.

The Academy also manages a busy schedule of public engagement. It organizes over 50 public lectures and seminars every year. Many of these events are free to the public. Some famous series include the Shakespeare Lecture, which began in 1911. The Academy also awards many prizes to recognize excellence. The President's Medal rewards signal service to the humanities and social sciences. Other awards include the Kenyon Medal and the Wiley Prize in Psychology. These prizes help celebrate landmark academic achievements.
