His career spans several major news networks and various forms of media. He is well known for his reporting on the White House and presidential elections. Hume has provided political insight to millions of viewers through television news. His work has helped shape how the public understands complex political events.

Hume's early career focused on print journalism and investigative reporting. He worked for several newspapers, including The Hartford Times and the Baltimore Evening Sun. From 1970 to 1972, he worked for the columnist Jack Anderson. During this period, Hume helped reveal classified documents regarding the Nixon administration. These documents showed the administration favored Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

This work led the CIA to surveil Hume and his family in 1972. He also published two books during these formative years of his career.

In 1973, Hume transitioned to broadcast journalism by joining ABC News. He spent 23 years at the network as a correspondent and anchor. For 11 years, he covered the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

In 1998, he launched his own program, Special Report with Brit Hume. The show debuted during the Lewinsky scandal in January 1998. The program grew significantly in popularity due to major political events. For example, the Florida recount during the 2000 election built a large, trusting audience. For several years, the show was the top cable news program in its time slot. Hume hosted the program until December 23, 2008.

After retiring as an anchor, Hume continued his work at Fox News in new roles. He became a senior political analyst and a regular panelist on Fox News Sunday.

In 2016, he briefly served as the anchor for the program On the Record. His first episode as host drew 2.4 million viewers. This was a double-digit increase over the previous anchor's average audience. He also participated in the extensive election night coverage for the 2020 presidential election. This coverage included working alongside analysts like Chris Wallace and Dana Perino.

Hume's personal life and family history are closely tied to his professional world. He was born in Washington, D.C., to George Graham Hume and Virginia Powell Hume. His ancestry includes Scottish roots tracing back to George Home in the 1700s. He attended the St. Albans School and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1965. His daughter, Virginia Hume, worked in political communications for the Republican National Committee. He also had a son, Sandy Hume, who was a reporter for The Hill. Sadly, Sandy died by suicide in February 1998.

Throughout his career, Hume has received several prestigious honors for his journalism. He won an Emmy Award for his coverage of the Gulf War in 1991. He also received the Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism in 2003. The American Journalism Review named him "Best in the Business" twice for his White House work.
