Josephson later went to Trinity College at the University of Cambridge. He first studied math but then switched to physics. He was a very bright student at Cambridge. Some teachers said he understood hard ideas very quickly.

In 1962, Josephson made a huge discovery while he was a student. He found something called the Josephson effect. This happens in superconductors, which are special materials. He predicted that a supercurrent could tunnel through a thin barrier. This means electricity flows through a wall even without a voltage drop. These devices are incredibly sensitive to magnetic fields. Because of this sensitivity, SQUIDs are used in medicine, computing, and geology. In 1980, the company IBM used his research to build a prototype computer switch. This experimental structure was designed to be much faster than standard technology. It could potentially be 10 to 100 times faster than the silicon-based chips used in the IBM 3033 mainframe.

The path to his discovery involved significant scientific debate. Before Anderson and Rowell confirmed his results, the famous physicist John Bardeen objected to the work. Bardeen argued that such a superfluid flow could not exist. This disagreement led to a famous confrontation in September 1962 at a conference in London. Even as a student, Josephson stood up to exchange views with Bardeen. Despite this early tension, the scientific community eventually recognized the truth of his calculations.
