Breeder reactor

A breeder reactor is a special kind of nuclear reactor. Most reactors use rare fuel to make energy. A breeder reactor is different because it makes more fuel than it uses.

It can use materials that are easy to find. These are called fertile materials. Two examples are uranium-238 and thorium-232. These are much more common than the rare uranium-235 used in normal reactors. This makes the reactor very useful for making long-term energy.

How does this magic happen? It all comes down to tiny particles called neutrons. Inside the reactor, neutrons fly around and hit the fertile material. This process is called transmutation. When a fertile material absorbs a neutron, it changes into fissile material. Fissile material is a type of fuel that can split to create power.

This high neutron economy allows the reactor to create extra fuel. The reactor essentially grows its own fuel while it works.

People have been studying these designs for a long time. The first fast reactor was the Clementine in Los Alamos, New Mexico. It used mercury to stay cool. Another early example was the Experimental Breeder Reactor I in 1951.

Interest in these reactors went down after the 1960s. This happened because people found more uranium reserves. New ways to enrich uranium also made fuel cheaper. However, many countries are still researching them today.

There are many different ways to build these machines. Fast breeder reactors use fast neutrons to work. They often use liquid metals like sodium to stay cool.

Some use lead or even molten salt. There are also thermal breeder reactors that use slow neutrons. These are thought to work well with thorium fuel. Currently, only two large breeder reactors are operating commercially. They are the BN-600 and the BN-800 in Russia.

Some advanced designs even help solve the problem of nuclear waste. The integral fast reactor (IFR) was designed for this. It can recycle its own fuel using a system called pyroprocessing.

This system uses electricity to separate the fuel from the waste. It can keep the site clean by recycling materials on-site. A large reactor using this could run on just a small amount of uranium each month. This makes it a very efficient way to use our natural resources.
