Breccia is a type of rock made of broken bits.

These bits are large and have sharp edges. Small grains, called a matrix, hold the pieces together.

Most rocks have smooth, round edges. This happens when they travel far in water. Breccia pieces stay sharp because they stay near their source.

This means the pieces did not move very far.

Some rocks have very big pieces. We call these megabreccias. A piece can be over 400 meters long! These form from landslides or when a comet hits Earth.

They can also form when a volcano collapses.

Breccia can form in many ways. Fault breccia forms when rocks slide past each other. Hydrothermal breccia forms when hot water boils deep underground.

This can create ore for mining gold or silver.

People love how breccia looks. It has been used for art for a long time. Ancient Egyptians made statues from it.
