Bratz is a global media franchise centered on a line of American fashion dolls. The brand was created by Carter Bryant, a former employee of Mattel. He developed the concept for MGA Entertainment. The dolls first entered the market in the spring of 2001.

They are famous for a very specific aesthetic. Each doll features large, almond-shaped eyes decorated with heavy eyeshadow. They also possess prominent, glossy lips. This stylized look helped the brand stand out in the competitive toy industry.

The franchise expanded through many different product lines known as spin-offs. These include Bratz Kidz, Bratz Boyz, and Bratz Babyz. There are also Bratzillaz dolls and various digital media. The brand includes a music discography, a TV series, and a web series. It has even been adapted into a live-action film and several video games. These different forms allowed the brand to reach many different types of fans.

The original lineup launched on May 21, 2001. These first four dolls were 10 inches (25 cm) tall. The group included Yasmin, who is Latina, and Cloe, an English blonde. The third doll was Jade, who is East Asian. The fourth doll was Sasha, who is Black.

A fifth member named Meygan, a Scottish redhead, joined the group in 2002. Over time, other characters like Fianna, Shira, Roxxi, and Phoebe were also introduced.

Bratz saw massive commercial success during its first few years. In the first five years, the brand sold 125 million products worldwide. By 2005, global sales for the entire franchise grossed $2 billion. This success changed the fashion-doll market significantly. In 2006, an industry analyst noted that Bratz held about 40 percent of the market. At that time, the leading competitor, Barbie, held 60 percent.

The brand's history is marked by intense legal and corporate struggles. MGA Entertainment engaged in a long legal dispute with Mattel. The fight concerned the rights to the doll designs. MGA was eventually declared the victor in 2011. There has also been ongoing litigation regarding the alleged theft of trade secrets.

Because of these legal issues, MGA paused the brand several times. They also rebranded the dolls multiple times to navigate these challenges.

Several controversies have surrounded the dolls since their debut. Some groups criticized the dolls' stylized proportions and fashion-forward clothing. In 2007, the American Psychological Association expressed concerns regarding adult-like sexuality. A UK spokesperson defended the line, stating it targeted preteens and teens. They argued the focus was on friendship and being pretty.

Other controversies involved factory conditions in China. A 2006 report alleged that workers faced very long hours and low pay. MGA CEO Isaac Larian denied these claims, calling them false.

In recent years, Bratz has focused on major collaborations and anniversaries. To celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2021, the brand released reproductions of the 2001 dolls. They also released the popular Rock Angelz collection from 2005.

The brand has partnered with celebrities like Kylie Jenner for special collections. They also collaborated with Paramount for a Mean Girls film collection in 2024. In 2024, they even released dolls based on stars like Miley Cyrus and Chappell Roan. These partnerships help the brand stay relevant to new generations of collectors.
