Scientists study objects called branes. The word comes from the word membrane.

Branes can be many shapes. A tiny dot is a 0-brane. A long string is a 1-brane. A flat sheet is a 2-brane. Scientists use the term p-brane for any size. These objects have mass. They also move through space.

Some branes are called D-branes. These are very important in string theory. In this theory, strings can be open. An open string has two ends. These ends must stay on a D-brane. This rule is called a Dirichlet boundary condition. D-branes help us understand how tiny particles work. They also help us study math. Mathematicians look at branes in special shapes. One shape is called a Calabi-Yau manifold. Branes can sit inside these shapes like surfaces. This helps math experts bridge two different kinds of geometry. They use these shapes to solve hard problems.
