Bougainville is a group of islands. It is part of Papua New Guinea. In the 1960s, people found a huge copper mine there. The Panguna mine was the largest in the world. It made a lot of money for the government. But the mine caused many problems for local people. It brought many new workers to the island. It also changed the land in bad ways. Local landowners were not happy with the mine. They felt the profits left the island.

In 1988, fighting began. A group called the Bougainville Revolutionary Army fought the government. The conflict lasted many years. Many people died during this time. Some say 15,000 to 20,000 people died. Others say the number was lower.

The fighting was very hard for the people living there.

Leaders tried to make peace many times. In 1998, they signed a peace agreement. This agreement helped end the war. Now, Bougainville has its own government. This lets them make more choices for their own land.
