Before entering politics, Nemtsov was a highly accomplished academic. He studied physics at the State University of Gorky, graduating in 1981. By 1985, he had defended his dissertation to earn a PhD in Physics and Mathematics. He worked as a research fellow at the Radiophysical Research Institute until 1990. During this time, he published more than 60 academic papers. His research covered complex topics like quantum physics, thermodynamics, and acoustics. He even proposed a theoretical model for an acoustic laser. He also designed a new type of antenna for space probes.

Nemtsov's political journey began with local activism and rapid advancement. In 1986, he organized a protest movement following the Chernobyl disaster. This movement successfully stopped the construction of a nuclear-fired boiler plant in his home region. In 1990, he was elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Republic. He was the only non-communist candidate to win his seat. This success led President Boris Yeltsin to appoint him Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in 1991. He served in this role until 1997 and was re-elected in 1995.

As governor, Nemtsov implemented a program called the "Laboratory of Reform." He sought to transform his region through wide-ranging free market reforms. Because the province had been closed to foreigners for years, money was scarce. To help the privatization program, he even issued local money called "Nemtsovki." These were chits that people eventually exchanged for rubles. His economic work earned him praise from international leaders, including Margaret Thatcher. He moved into national leadership in 1997 as the Minister of Fuel and Energy. He also served as Vice Premier of Russia during this period.

Nemtsov's career faced a major challenge during the 1998 Russian economic crisis. The stock market crashed, which hurt his standing in the government. Despite this, he worked to make the energy sector more transparent. He introduced anti-corruption laws for state purchases and ended the illegal export of raw materials. In 1999, he co-founded the Union of Right Forces. This was an electoral bloc and political party that received nearly 6 million votes. In the December 1999 elections, the group earned 8.6% of the total vote. Nemtsov was subsequently elected to the State Duma, the lower house of Parliament.

From 2000 onward, Nemtsov became a central figure in the political opposition. He believed President Putin's government was becoming increasingly authoritarian and undemocratic. He used his platform to highlight widespread corruption and embezzlement. After 2008, he published detailed reports connecting corruption directly to the President. He was a frequent organizer of public actions. These included the Dissenters' Marches and rallies titled "For Fair Elections."

He even used his personal website to communicate directly with the public.

Nemtsov's opposition work became more focused on international conflicts. He was a vocal critic of Russian military involvement in Ukraine. At the time of his death, he was working on a report regarding this issue. The report claimed Russian troops were fighting alongside rebels in eastern Ukraine. This was a claim the Kremlin had been denying at the time. He was also organizing a rally to address the Russian financial crisis.

Boris Nemtsov was assassinated on February 27, 2015. The event took place on a bridge near the Kremlin in Moscow. He was shot four times from behind while he was working on his political organizing. In June 2017, a Moscow court found five men guilty for the crime. The jury determined they agreed to the killing for 15 million rubles. The identity of the person who hired them remains officially unknown. Many people continue to honor his memory through large public marches.
