Akunin is most famous for writing historical fiction. His stories often focus on mysteries set in Imperial Russia. He is also a skilled essayist and a literary translator. He has achieved great success in the world of crime fiction. Many readers appreciate his ability to blend history with suspenseful plots.

Akunin uses a specific method for creating his literary identity. He writes his fiction under the pseudonym "B. Akunin." The "B" stands for Boris. The name "Akunin" comes from a Japanese word. In Japanese, it translates to "great bad man." In his novel *The Diamond Chariot*, he redefines this term. He describes an *akunin* as an evil man who makes his own rules. He has also used other pen names like Anatoly Brusnikin and Anna Borisova. This allows him to separate his critical works from his fiction.

His writing often follows specific characters through detailed historical settings. His most famous series is *The Adventures of Erast Fandorin*. This series includes many different subgenres of detective fiction. For example, *The Winter Queen* is a conspiracy mystery. *The Turkish Gambit* functions as a spy mystery. *Murder on the Leviathan* is a closed set-up mystery. He also created the *Sister Pelagia* series. This series follows a crime-solving nun in provincial Russia. These characters allow him to explore many different parts of history.

Chkhartishvili's career is deeply connected to his expertise in Japanese culture. He studied at Moscow State University as an expert on Japan. He was influenced by Japanese kabuki theatre, a traditional form of drama. This knowledge led him to work as a literary translator. He translated works from Japanese and English into Russian. He translated famous authors like Yukio Mishima and Kobo Abe. He even served as the editor-in-chief for a 20-volume *Anthology of Japanese Literature*. This background adds great depth to his writing.

Akunin has received numerous prestigious awards and honors. In the year 2000, he was named Russian Writer of the Year. That same year, he won the "Antibooker" prize for his novel *Coronation*. His work has also reached international audiences. In 2003, *The Winter Queen* was shortlisted for the British Dagger Award. He was awarded a prize by the Japan Foundation in 2009. This honor recognized his work in developing cultural ties between Russia and Japan. He also won the Noma Prize in 2007 for his translations.

His life and work have faced significant political challenges. Akunin has been critical of Russian domestic and foreign policies. This has led to serious consequences from the Russian government. In 2024, he was designated a "foreign agent" by the Ministry of Justice. This status requires him to identify himself as such in all publications. The Russian government also placed him on a wanted list. In July 2025, he was sentenced in absentia to 14 years in prison. These legal actions were related to charges of spreading false information.

Despite these difficulties, Akunin's stories continue to be adapted for other media. Several of his books have become major motion pictures. *The Turkish Gambit* and *The State Counsellor* were made into big-budget films. His novel *Azazel* was adapted for television twice. The character Pelagia was also featured in a 2009 TV mini-series. His work connects literature, history, and cinema. His legacy remains a major part of modern Russian and international literature.
