At first, the computer's brain has no software. Software is the set of instructions that tells the machine what to do. Because the memory is empty, the computer needs a way to load its rules. This is a bit like pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. It means using a small thing to start a much bigger thing.

Early computers were very different. The ENIAC used cables and switches to work.

Later, computers used a bootstrap loader. This is a tiny program that finds and loads even more programs.

Today, many computers use ROM. ROM is a type of memory that cannot be erased. It holds a start-up program that is always ready.

This makes starting the computer very fast. Booting is done when the operating system is running. The operating system is the main program that runs the whole machine.
