The city is a meeting place for different cultures. Most people speak Italian or German. A small number of people speak Ladin. This is the oldest language in the area. Because of this, the city has two official names. It is called Bolzano in Italian and Bozen in German.

Bolzano has a unique climate. It is in a valley south of the main Alps. This protects the city from cool winds. Summers are hot and winters are very cold. In 2020, Bolzano was ranked first for quality of life in Italian cities.
