This family had once included emperors and many influential consuls. However, the family had lost much of its power before his birth. His father, Manlius Boethius, died while he was still young. Consequently, he was adopted and raised by Quintus Aurelius Memmius Symmachus. Symmachus was a patrician who introduced him to literature and philosophy. Boethius later married Symmachus' daughter, Rusticiana, and they had two children. Both children were named Symmachus and Boethius.

One of his most vital contributions was the translation of Greek classics.

At the time, mastery of the Greek language was a rare skill in the West. Boethius worked to translate the entire works of Plato and Aristotle into Latin. Some scholars believe he may have studied in Athens or Alexandria. For example, Pierre Courcelle argued he studied with Ammonius Hermiae in Alexandria. Regardless of where he studied, his fluency was remarkable. These translations were essential for the survival of Greek thought. Without them, many works of Aristotle might not have reached the Renaissance.

Boethius rose through the ranks of the Ostrogothic government very quickly. He became a senator at age 25 and a consul by age 33. He eventually became the magister officiorum, which was the head of government affairs. He served as a personal advisor to King Theodoric. In 522, Boethius achieved a great personal milestone. Both of his sons were selected to be consuls. This was an exceptional honor that showed the king's favor. He described this moment as if it were a military triumph.

His commitment to justice eventually led to his downfall.

Boethius used his authority to fight corruption within the Roman court. He fought against officials who sought to exploit the poor. He also tried to stop food shipments to prevent a famine in Campania. These actions made him very unpopular with other court members. In 523, he was accused of treason during a meeting in Verona. He defended a fellow consul, Caecina Albinus, against charges of conspiracy. This defense resulted in his arrest and imprisonment in Pavia.

While he was in prison, Boethius wrote his most famous work.

Boethius was executed in 524, though the exact method is debated. Some sources suggest he was beheaded, while others suggest he was hanged or clubbed. He was a martyr in the Christian tradition. His remains were placed in the church of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro. His death had a major impact on his family. His wealth was taken, and his wife was left in poverty.
