Bocchus was a king in North Africa. He ruled a land called Mauretania. This land sat by the Atlantic Ocean. He was likely the son or grandson of King Baga. Bocchus had many wives and four children. His daughter married King Jugurtha of Numidia. This was a nearby land.

At first, Bocchus helped Jugurtha. They fought against Rome in a long war. Jugurtha promised to give Bocchus part of his land. But the war did not end. Bocchus changed his mind. He met with a Roman leader named Sulla. Bocchus set a trap for Jugurtha. He handed Jugurtha over to the Romans.

After this, the Romans and Bocchus split the Numidian land. Bocchus also sent animals to Rome. He sent lions and panthers for shows. A Roman leader kept a gold ring from Bocchus. The ring showed Bocchus giving Jugurtha to Sulla. After Bocchus died, his son Mastanesosus ruled. Later, his grandsons ruled half the land each.
