The black ghost knifefish is a fascinating tropical fish.

It belongs to the ghost knifefish family, called Apteronotidae. These fish live in freshwater in South America. Their homes range from Venezuela to the Paraguay–Paraná River. They are often found in the huge Amazon Basin. Many people keep them in aquariums as pets. They are mostly black with two white rings on their tail. A white stripe might also run from their nose to their head.

This fish has a very special way of moving. It uses a long fin on its belly to swim. This fin moves in waves, which is called undulating. Because the body stays stiff, they look like knives slicing through water. This is why they are called knifefish. This movement lets them swim in any direction. They can go forwards, backwards, or even sideways. They can even hover or swim upside down.

One of the most amazing things is their electricity. They are weakly electric fish. This means they can make and feel electric signals. They use an electric organ in their tail to make these signals. This process is called electrogenesis. To sense the signals, they use tiny parts in their skin. These are called electroreceptor organs. They use these signals for electrolocation to find objects. They also use them to talk to other fish.

Humans have studied these fish for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first recorded this species in 1766. Scientists use them for important research today. They study how drugs and pollutants affect living things. This is because they have a low number of chromosomes. A chromosome is a part of a cell that holds information. They are also great models for new underwater vehicles. Engineers look at how the fish moves so well. Their high maneuverability is very helpful for design.

In the wild, these fish are night hunters. They are nocturnal, so they are active when it is dark. They eat things like insect larvae and small shrimp. They use their electric sense to find food in muddy water. They can even find tiny holes to hide their eggs. This helps them keep their babies safe. Even though they are popular pets, we must protect them. Many are taken from the wild to be sold. We can help by learning more about them.
