Biruté Galdikas was a scientist who studied primates. Primates are a group of animals that includes apes. Before her work, people knew very little about orangutans.

In 1971, Biruté went to Borneo to study them. She set up a camp called Camp Leakey. This camp was near the Java Sea. She spent over 40 years in the forest. She watched how orangutans live and act. Her work was a very long study of mammals.

Biruté also helped orangutans that had no homes. Some were orphans that people kept as pets. She helped them learn to live in the wild again. She also worked to protect the rainforest. The forest was being lost to loggers and mines.

She started a group called Orangutan Foundation International. This group helps orangutans all over the world. Biruté was a professor at a university too. She won many awards for her work. She was even on the cover of National Geographic. She died in 2026 after a battle with lung cancer.
