It sits inside a place called Jones Valley. Long mountain ridges run along both sides of this valley. Red Mountain is a very famous ridge just south of the downtown area. Many radio and television towers sit high up on that ridge. Small creeks like Village Creek and Valley Creek flow through the land. These creeks eventually lead into the Black Warrior River.

The city was built to be a great center for industry. It was founded on June 1, 1871, by the Elyton Land Company. This group included bankers and people who owned railroads. They named the city after Birmingham in England. The location was very special for making steel. It is the only place in the world where iron ore, coal, and limestone are all found close together. These three things are the main ingredients needed to make steel.
